Emotions Matter Why Christian Women Must Embrace Emotional Recognition and Regulation

Hello Queen,

I pray that your day has been truly amazing, and you are embracing God’s blessing on your life. Today, I want to share with you that as Christian women, we are often seen as the nurturers, the prayer warriors, the strong ones holding it all together. But beneath the smiles and strength, there’s an emotional world inside of us that deserves just as much attention as our spiritual walk.

Sis, recognizing and regulating your emotions isn’t just a psychological practice, it’s a spiritual one too. God created you with emotions, and they aren’t something to suppress or ignore. They are God-designed signals that tell you what’s going on in your heart. Jesus himself experienced a full range of emotions: He wept, rejoiced, became angry with injustice, and felt deep compassion. If the Son of God expressed emotion, surely it’s something you, too, are meant to honor and understand. Proverbs 4:23 teaches us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Part of guarding your heart is becoming aware of what you feel and why you feel it.

Emotional Recognition

Let’s define what emotional recognition is. Basically, it’s naming what is inside of you. Emotional recognition is the ability to identify what you are feeling. Too often, it has become common for us as Christian women when asked how we are doing to say, “I’m blessed and highly favored,” when the truth is you are anxious, disappointed, overwhelmed, or just plain tired. But when you pause and name the emotion honestly and unapologetically, you take the first step toward healing and wisdom.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?

  • What triggered this emotion?

  • What is God showing me through this?

When you invite the Holy Spirit into this process, it becomes less about controlling emotions and more about stewarding them with grace.

Emotional Regulation

Now, let’s define emotional regulation. It is not about suppressing how you feel, but it is about responding in a way that aligns with your values and your faith. Basically, it means pausing before reacting, praying before speaking, and letting the fruit of the Spirit guide your responses.

Galatians 5:22-23 teaches us, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Sis, these are not just personality traits; they are spiritual tools you can use when emotions run high.

Imagine the peace you could bring into your home, your job, and your relationships when you regulate (or master) your emotions instead of being ruled by them. Let me share with you the reason it matters as a Christian woman.

  • It deepens your relationship with God. When you’re honest about your emotions, you open the door to deeper intimacy with Him.

  • It strengthens your witness. A woman who can walk through life’s challenges with emotional wisdom is a powerful testimony of God’s grace.

  • It nurtures healthier relationships. Emotional regulation helps you communicate better, resolve conflict more lovingly, and model grace for others.

Here are four practical steps you can use to start recognizing and regulating your emotions today:

  1. Journal your emotions daily. Writing them down helps you recognize patterns and take them to God.

  2. Pray with honesty. Don’t just pray what sounds “right”, tell God how you really feel.

  3. Take deep breaths and pause before reacting. Sometimes all it takes is a sacred pause.

  4. Seek support. Whether it’s a Pastor, life coach, counselor, or trusted friend, don’t walk this road alone.

Queen, you are strong, but you are also allowed to feel. Be a woman who leads with wisdom, love deeply, and steward your emotions with the grace of God. Emotional recognition and regulation are not signs of weakness, they are signs of spiritual maturity and courageous living. Stay strong and courageous, sis. God’s got you.

My Final Encouragement

My beautiful sister, if you’ve ever felt ashamed for feeling “too much” or struggled to keep your emotions in check, know this: God sees you, loves you, and wants to meet you right where you are. Your emotions are not a burden, they are a beautiful part of how you were created. Don’t be afraid to feel, to reflect, and to grow.

As you lean into emotional awareness and invite the Holy Spirit into your emotional world, trust that God will equip you with wisdom, peace, and strength. You don’t have to navigate your emotions alone; He is your ever-present help. Take one small step today toward emotional wholeness, and watch how God transforms not just your emotions, but your entire life. You are strong. You are courageous. You are deeply loved. Keep shining, and let your emotional growth be a testimony of God’s grace working in you and through you.

Love and Blessings,

Dr. Doris
