Faith Over Feelings: How Emotional Intelligence Strengthens Your Walk with God

Hello Queen,

I pray you are having a beautiful start to a blessed week. Since I was a small child, I have always been interested in the answer to the question: Why do people do what they do? I often wonder why adults say they love each other during the wedding and the honeymoon, but fight and mistreat each other after they get married. I also wondered why people would physically abuse and neglect children whom they say they wanted or asked God for, and why children would bully their classmates who can’t defend themselves. As I became an adult and studied this topic for years, I learned that hurting people hurt people. That includes children, too.

When a person has emotional pain, it can reflect a cycle where individuals who have experienced emotional, physical, or psychological pain may unintentionally inflict harm on others, often as a result of their own unresolved trauma or coping mechanisms. Therefore, today my sister I want to share with you the concept that you have been given the power to master your emotions and not let them master you. Let’s get started.

Emotions are a God-given part of who you are, but they were never meant to lead your life; faith was. Emotional intelligence (EQ) doesn’t mean suppressing how you feel; it means understanding your emotions, mastering them with wisdom, and aligning them with your identity in Christ. When faith leads and emotional maturity follows, you walk in power, peace, and purpose.

The Connection Between Faith and Emotional Intelligence

Queen, please understand that faith calls us to trust beyond what we feel. Emotional intelligence helps us discern the difference between truth and emotional impulse. Jesus modeled this perfectly. He felt deeply but never allowed His emotions to control His actions. (except when He ran everyone out of the temple for disrespecting God’s house) I don’t blame Him for that, I would have done the same. At other times, He prayed through pain, led with compassion, and obeyed with purpose. There was an emotional and spiritual maturity Jesus had, and we must follow His example. To walk in emotional and spiritual maturity, we must:

  • Recognize our emotions without letting them rule us

  • Align our responses with God’s Word, not temporary feelings

  • Stay rooted in truth even when emotions fluctuate

Scripture Reflection
  • A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.” (Proverbs 25:28) NLT

  • “We live by faith, not by sight.”(2 Corinthians 5:7) NIV

  • “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”(Galatians 5:22-23) NIV

Reflection Questions

(Take time to sit in a quiet place and reflect on these questions.)

  1. In what situations do you find it hardest to let faith lead over your feelings?

  2. How do your emotions typically influence your decision-making?

  3. What’s one way you can practice emotional intelligence (mastering your emotions) in your relationships this week?

Journal Prompt

Write a letter to God expressing how you feel about a current situation. Then, write a second part to that letter where you invite the Holy Spirit to help you respond from a place of faith and emotional maturity. (Queen, this letter can be about anything you choose, and it stays between you and your heavenly Father.)

Let’s Pray

Father, thank You for creating my beautiful sister with emotions. Help her to grow in emotional intelligence so she can respond with wisdom, not just feelings. Teach her to pause, reflect, and walk by faith, even when her emotions are loud and strong. Let Your Word guide her, and Your Spirit lead her. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Love and Blessings,

Dr. Doris
